About Us

Broom Hockey Club has been in existence for over 35 years and during this time we have seen many different members and players and played at numerous different grounds.

Our club started in Ferryhill, Durham at Broom School back in the 1970's. There isn't much written history but some of us longer standing members have had the honour to meet some of our founder members.
We have had many different bases, starting at Ferryhill. This was the time of grass hockey (yes, we used to play on grass!) When Silksworth, Sunderland was built we moved over there. We were still in Durham league and all league matches were and are still played at Silksworth.

Broom were Durham League Champions three years in a row (1994/95, 1995/96, and
1996/97) which qualified us to go to Play Offs to try to achieve North League Status. The first two play offs were unsuccessful but the third year 1996/97 saw the introduction of the North's Feeder Leagues. We gained automatic promotion to Feeder League East and after our first season won promotion to North League 2.

We have been in North League ever since and only experiencing relegation once during the 2000/2001 season. During this time we played and trained at Chester-le-Street Riverside but because of rising costs we had to train at Silksworth and play our matches at the Riverside.

Our highest league position was in 1998/1999 where we came second from top North League 1 (equivalent to North Premier now) only just missing National League Play Off to Liverpool. That was a game and a half!
That was then but this is now… North League Division 1, playing at Sandhill View Sport Centre, using Ashbrooke Sport and Social Club for refreshments. We have four teams in total now; 1st XI, 2nd XI, 3rd XI, and a junior section. The 2nds and 3rds play in Durham league respectively and the juniors are thriving in Harpers League and doing well in their Sunday youth league.
